Underlay is easy to overlook because customers focus on the visible plank. But it forms part of the flooring system and can affect noise, comfort and long-term joint performance. Choosing by thickness alone is a mistake; the selected laminate and subfloor requirements should drive the choice.
What underlay actually does
An appropriate underlay can help moderate transmitted sound and offer a suitable support layer beneath floating laminate. It is not designed to flatten major dips or correct a failing subfloor. The installer should verify compatibility with the plank locking system and intended use.
Moisture matters on concrete
Some systems require specific moisture or vapour-control measures where the substrate is concrete. A foil facing does not make a wet slab ready for flooring. Follow the laminate manufacturer’s moisture criteria and have the substrate assessed before installation.
Do not stack incompatible layers
Too much compressibility beneath a click floor can increase movement and joint stress. Use only the system recommended for the product rather than adding arbitrary layers to create a softer feel. Transitions and final floor height should also be checked.
Include it in the quotation
When you ask about Titan Classic AC3 or Titan Elite AC4, request compatible underlay and specify whether the site has a concrete substrate. Also ask about profiles, skirting and delivery so the material quote reflects the full supply requirements.
Underlay questions to settle before paying
Underlay is part of the flooring system rather than an optional comfort extra. Ask whether the selected laminate and substrate require an approved vapour-control layer and confirm compatible underlay thickness, compressive strength and acoustic performance. “Thicker” is not necessarily better: a soft, unsuitable foam can allow excessive movement in click joints.
In South African homes with concrete slabs or screed, substrate moisture management is especially important. A foil-faced layer is not a substitute for diagnosing active damp, failed waterproofing or leaks. Your installer should follow the manufacturer's moisture testing and underlay specification.
SPC with factory-attached underlay should not automatically be placed on top of another foam underlay. Check the exact brand's fitting instructions. Include underlay and moisture-protection costs when comparing laminate with SPC or glue-down LVT.
Choose premium quality by checking the actual board
Ask for an 8 mm laminate sample showing the 240 mm plank width, AC3 or AC4 classification and wax-treated V-groove/click profile. View the real EIR texture on colours where available. Wax-treated joins can help with ordinary spills, but laminate remains water-resistant rather than waterproof. Professional independent installers with 10+ years’ experience may be available by referral; request their separate labour quotation.
Why doubling underlay can create problems
Underlay should match the laminate system and moisture-management requirements. Adding extra soft layers can alter click-joint loading and void product guidance.
Titan SPC already has a specified attached backing; do not add another layer without written approval for that exact product.
Questions buyers ask
Is underlay included in R204/m²?
Do not assume it is included. Ask for an itemised quote for the chosen product and underlay.
Does thicker underlay always sound better?
No. Acoustic performance and system compatibility matter more than thickness alone.
Can FlooringXpress recommend a reliable installer?
Ask our team about independent professional flooring installers, including experienced fitters with 10+ years of installation experience, subject to your area and current availability. Installation labour, site assessment, fitting dates and workmanship terms are agreed directly with the installer; FlooringXpress supplies the flooring materials.
