A flooring decision should start with the actual room and project requirements. Step-by-step worked examples for flooring m² estimates, cutting allowance, complete box rounding and an itemised WhatsApp quote.
Start with a simple room plan
Draw every room separately rather than estimating total area from the house size. A bedroom measuring 4 m × 3 m is 12 m². A lounge measuring 5 m × 4 m is 20 m². A passage measuring 6 m × 1.2 m is 7.2 m².
Add the net measured areas
In this example, 12 + 20 + 7.2 = 39.2 m² of floor area. Measure cupboards, recesses, pillars and odd-shaped corners with the installer so you do not leave out small but material-consuming spaces.
Show cutting allowance transparently
A 5% illustrative cutting allowance brings 39.2 m² to 41.16 m²; 10% brings it to 43.12 m². Neither automatically equals the number of boxes to order. Actual waste may differ with plank direction, broken areas and fit pattern.
Round to full boxes, not loose square metres
If an example product covered 2.44 m² per carton, 43.12 ÷ 2.44 requires rounding up to 18 cartons, equivalent to 43.92 m². This box coverage is an illustration: your actual Titan carton coverage must be confirmed against the specific range and batch.
Calculate material price correctly
At an illustrative purchased quantity of 43.92 m², R204/m² AC3 gives R8,959.68 in flooring material and R214/m² AC4 gives R9,398.88, before VAT clarification, underlay, trims, fitting and delivery. These are worked examples, not live quotations.
What to send the supplier
Send a room-by-room list, your chosen floor colour, measured total, proposed cutting allowance and delivery suburb. The team can then quote the current full boxes, matching trims, stock and delivery rather than guess from a single rough figure.
What to include in a proper flooring quotation
- Actual room-by-room measurements and cutting allowance confirmed by your installer.
- Selected product name, thickness, wear classification, colour and full-box quantity.
- Underlay, moisture management, skirtings and transition profiles where needed.
- Current material price, stock, VAT treatment and delivery/collection details.
- Any independent fitting scope, preparation work and workmanship terms.
Materials supplier since 2018. The advertised Titan 8 mm laminate uses 240 mm wide planks and wax-treated grooves. These improve resistance to incidental cleaned-up splashes; laminate is not fully waterproof. EIR is a texture feature on selected designs. Fitting is available through independent professional installer referrals subject to availability and verification.
Questions buyers ask
Can I order exactly 39.2 m²?
Not necessarily: boards are typically sold in full boxes and cutting allowance is required.
Is 10% cutting waste always enough?
No. Your installer should set the allowance based on shape, plank layout and product.
Does your online estimate include labour?
No. The estimate is material-only; independent fitting must be arranged and quoted separately.
