Laminate and vinyl floors can both create a convincing timber appearance, but their cores and installation methods differ. Before deciding, consider where the floor will go, whether moisture is a concern, how level the substrate is and whether you prefer a floating click or glued installation.
What laminate offers
Titan Classic and Elite use an 8mm laminate format with a 240mm wide-plank appearance. The advertised AC3 and AC4 material prices are R204/m² and R214/m². Laminate can provide a warm timber look for ordinary dry residential areas, provided spills and subfloor moisture are controlled.
What SPC click vinyl offers
Titan SPC is a rigid-core click vinyl floor, advertised at R389/m². Its listed specification includes 6mm overall thickness, a 0.5mm wear layer and 1mm IXPE backing. The product core is waterproof, but the installed floor does not make an unprepared or wet subfloor safe.
What glue-down LVT changes
Glue-down LVT is a different system. A suitable, accurately prepared substrate and correct adhesive are essential. Thin glue-down material generally does not hide subfloor imperfections. Ask the installer to confirm moisture and flatness before committing to LVT.
Make a room-by-room decision
For a normal-use bedroom, laminate may provide better price value. For areas where moisture or spills are common, SPC may be easier to justify. The right answer depends on the whole installation conditions, not a universal claim that one category is always best.
Choose by room conditions—not the label alone
Living rooms and bedrooms: 8 mm laminate can offer an attractive, warm timber appearance. Compare Titan Classic AC3 with Titan Elite AC4 if foot traffic, furniture movement or family activity is high. The published AC4 material premium is R10/m² at the stated prices, before any additional costs.
Kitchens and entrances: regular tracked-in moisture makes SPC click vinyl worth comparing. Its board construction resists water, but the whole floor still requires correct perimeter details, moisture control and timely cleaning. Do not describe an HDF laminate floor as fully waterproof simply because its grooves are wax treated.
Large commercial or rental areas: assess wear rating, expected maintenance, likely damage and replacement logistics. Glue-down LVT can suit particular fitting designs, but substrate preparation and compatible adhesive are essential. SPC floating floors have different movement and fixed-fixture rules. Ask the installer to advise for the actual site.
For a meaningful side-by-side quote, specify room use, measured area, existing substrate, pets, wet-area exposure and preferred colour. Compare installed-project requirements even if FlooringXpress is only supplying the floor material.
Laminate vs SPC: how water resistance really differs
FlooringXpress Titan laminate is 8 mm with wax-treated V-groove/click profiles designed to help resist everyday surface spills when promptly wiped up. Laminate is not waterproof. Titan SPC vinyl has a waterproof core, but any flooring installation can still be damaged by water trapped beneath it, unsealed perimeters and poor substrate conditions.
Appearance and texture, not only thickness
For a classic wood look, compare 240 mm wide-plank laminate with a wood-grain embossed finish. EIR (embossed in register) is a texture aligned to the timber print where specified on the selected design; verify the sample. SPC offers a different feel, 230 mm plank width on the Titan range and a 0.5 mm wear layer.
Compare actual installed total
Flooring is not just planks. Compare flooring m², box rounding, laminate underlay, trims, subfloor preparation, delivery and independent fitting. FlooringXpress supplies materials and may provide contacts for experienced independent installers; labour is a separate quote.
A decision based on actual room risk
Ask whether a room routinely receives wet shoes, mop water or tracked-in rain. Those risks matter more than calling either product “premium”. Rigid SPC has a waterproof core; laminate has an HDF core and wax-treated joints that improve limited spill resistance only.
For any vinyl system, a waterproof board does not automatically waterproof the subfloor, perimeter or building.
Product comparison: what is actually different?
| Product | Construction | Primary consideration | Advertised material price* |
|---|---|---|---|
| Titan Classic AC3 | 8 mm laminate, 240 mm boards | Ordinary dry residential rooms | R204/m² |
| Titan Elite AC4 | 8 mm laminate, 240 mm boards | Higher abrasion classification for busier dry rooms | R214/m² |
| Titan SPC click vinyl | 6 mm total, 0.5 mm wear, attached IXPE | Waterproof core; suitable fitting conditions still required | R389/m² |

Questions buyers ask
Is all vinyl flooring waterproof?
Different products and installations vary. Titan SPC has a waterproof core, but water can still affect the substrate and surrounding building.
Is laminate always cheaper than SPC?
The currently advertised Titan laminate material prices are lower than the SPC price, but compare complete system and installation costs.
