An 8mm laminate floor can be an excellent choice for a residential interior when the board quality, locking system and subfloor preparation are right. Thickness is only one part of the specification. Before comparing rand-per-square-metre prices, check how the floor will be used and what is included.
Wear rating and thickness are different
AC3 and AC4 describe surface abrasion performance; 8mm describes board thickness. An AC4 8mm product can offer higher surface wear resistance than an AC3 8mm product without being physically thicker. The choice should follow traffic levels, the approved use class and the warranty terms.
Why plank width changes the appearance
The Titan laminate ranges on FlooringXpress use 240mm wide planks, wider than many traditional narrow boards. This can create a calmer, more modern visual in open-plan spaces. It does not eliminate expansion-gap requirements or the need for a properly prepared, flat substrate.
Underlay, locking and edge treatment
Ask the supplier about compatible underlay, board joint details and moisture recommendations. Wax-treated V-grooves help with the board’s edge specification but do not make an installed laminate floor waterproof. Never expect joints to compensate for standing water or a damp subfloor.
Compare an actual specification
Titan Classic AC3 is advertised at R204/m² and Titan Elite AC4 at R214/m². Compare the full product specification and obtain the box coverage before ordering. Your installer can calculate the required number of boxes and accessories.
Why 8 mm plus 240 mm is worth comparing
Thickness and plank width measure different properties. An 8 mm HDF laminate plank can offer a sturdy residential board with a premium broad-plank appearance at 240 mm. The AC rating relates to surface abrasion performance—not water resistance—and the HDF core still requires correct moisture protection and a level substrate.
Wax-treated groove and click details
The wax treatment around the join can help resist normal spills at the seam. It does not turn the floor into a waterproof system. Confirm the exact groove treatment and approved fitting method on the product batch you are buying.
EIR and visible wood-grain texture
Selected FlooringXpress laminate colours use EIR-style textured surfaces. If wood realism is important, view the board in person and compare the texture to the pattern under natural light. Do not infer EIR or durability solely from a product photograph.
Thickness does not replace a subfloor check
An 8 mm board fitted over unsuitable moisture or unevenness may perform poorly regardless of surface class. A fitter should inspect the floor before deciding that new laminate can cover existing tiles or a screed.
Ask for a physical colour sample and the manufacturer’s installation and warranty paperwork for the exact range.
Questions buyers ask
Is 8mm laminate too thin for a living room?
Not necessarily. A suitable rated floor installed over a properly prepared substrate can work well; choose based on the product use class and manufacturer guidance.
Does a thicker board automatically last longer?
No. Surface wear rating, core quality, moisture exposure, fit and maintenance matter too.
Can FlooringXpress recommend a reliable installer?
Ask our team about independent professional flooring installers, including experienced fitters with 10+ years of installation experience, subject to your area and current availability. Installation labour, site assessment, fitting dates and workmanship terms are agreed directly with the installer; FlooringXpress supplies the flooring materials.
